"Black and Hispanic children are being handed a stripped-down, debased curriculum. They are being trained to provide predictable answers and that provides a terrible danger for a democratic society. Principals, so terrified of No Child Left Behind and determined to pump up the scores, are restricting students’ learning to mechanistic skills in a narrow range of subjects. This does not equate to learning."
Jonathan Kozol, when interviewed about his fasting against NCLB
NYC Public School Art Educator since 1983.
A native New Yorker, born, raised, educated, work and reside here in NYC. full-blooded Italian, 3/4 Sicilian daughter of second-generation Italian-American parents - a college-educated school-and community-activist mother and a Republican/feminist engineer/financial whiz father. Identified as artistically gifted by my first grade teacher, who predicted I would go to Music and Art High School (which I did, Class of '72) Received a High Pass in the VIA 2000 school administration program from Fordham University. In-between these benchmarks have fought the stupidity and maintained my integrity and moral standards as a human being - one of these being that person who "bells the cat", much to the chagrin of many who'd rather I shut the **** up. Oh well. Maybe in the next life. p.s. I am also a painter, ceramist, and photographer...
